Slovenia has three wine regions and the most eastern one surprises us with its uniqueness!

repnice

This time we would like to present to you the place, which is situated along the Slovenian Croatian border, a good hour from the Slovenian capital Ljubljana towards East.

This is a Bizeljsko Wine region where they keep their best wines in a unique storage halls- repnice. Repnice have a long tradition and today they are a part of a special local cultural heritage!

The area is picturesque, refreshing green from May until late October.  It used to be a part of majestic Pannonian Sea and today it is reach on quark sand. Locals use to dig with their farmers tools and after some centuries, they created unique caves. The permanent temperature and the ideal humidity conditions enabled the local farmers to use it as a perfect storage place for their produce: potato, cabbage and mainly, here very popular and tasty, turnip.  Turnip in Slovenian language is called REPA and so these man made underground caves got its name: REPNICE or TURNIP CAVES. Some of them are more than 200 yrs. old and the others are newly made. Locals today still make them for their own use. Some of them got vivid frescos made by the Mother Nature and its glittery crystals of its golden brown sand.

For visitors today, repnice are more interesting because of the wine storage: the temperature and humidity are ideal for wine storage! Would you imagine a better place to taste local goodies: cheese, sausage and wine like Riesling, Pinot Gris or Muscat?
